Kobyluck History

Maureen & Dan Kobyluck

After dropping out of high school for a year, Dan Kobyluck returned so he could get his diploma. He wasn't sure if it would do him any good, but he believed it was important to have. As fate would have it, this decision led him to meet a pretty Mohegan girl who sat behind him in English class. After six weeks of persistence, she finally said "yes" to a date. That was just the beginning, as Dan and Maureen would go on to marry, and then have six children. This growing family was, and still is, a driving force behind the Kobyluck family of companies.

Growing up, Dan worked as an equipment operator for his father in the family construction business. When his father retired from the business in 1972, he offered Dan a couple of dump trucks. Dan started hauling sand and gravel and Kobyluck Trucking was born. In time, Dan bought a portable crusher, a loader and more trucks. In 1985 he purchased Della Construction's sand and gravel operation in Oakdale and formed Kobyluck Sand & Gravel, Inc. Meanwhile, Dan and Maureen were investing all of their savings into their expanding businesses. The premise was to build these companies up for their sons' futures. Those sons, Dan, Chris, Matt, Josh and Mark along with daughter, Dana, grew up with Kobyluck Trucking. Chris and Dan graduated from high school in 1986 and began working full-time operating the equipment and maintaining the crushing plant and trucks. Matt, Josh and Mark joined them when they finished school. Dana moved on to the retail business, managing and buying for the Mohegan Sun Casino.

Tragedy struck the heart of the family in 1994 when Dan Jr. died. It was a devastating blow, but as Maureen remembers, "At a family meeting we said, "Are we going to not go on anymore, or are we going to put all our energies into work? Let's all heal and get on with it." And that has kept us all together-working hard, creating things, spending time together." That is exactly what they did and what they continue to do today. The Kobyluck companies continue to grow and now consist of Trucking, Sand & Gravel, Ready-Mix and Construction.

An extended family consists of excellent management staff and employees hand selected by the Kobyluck family. A sense of family pride extends from management in the office through the employees in the field and ultimately to the community. The Kobyluck companies sponsor community baseball, football, soccer and basketball teams. They also donated labor and materials to build a Babe Ruth field at Mohegan School in Montville. This field was named after Dan Jr. For the Kobylucks, the field was not only a memorial to a son and a brother but also a confirmation of their family values - to work hard, to be creative and to share themselves with others.
